Diatoms, radiolarians, and siliceous sponges use biosilicon as a skeleton or torso. The radiolarian is made of tiny needle-shaped silicon dioxide to form its unique body. Some plants require silicon to grow, such as plants with long stems that need silicon to stay upright. Silicon has been shown to increase cell wall strength and structural integrity in certain plants. Diatoms are algae that perform photosynthesis. It is unique in that the cell wall is made of silicon dioxide.
