Does silicone oil harm the scalp? No evidence!


It is said that long-term use of silicone oil will lead to the failure of thorough cleaning of the silicone oil on the hair and the continuous covering of the outer layer of the hair, which will not only lead to the loss of elasticity of the hair, but also block the pores, cause scalp itching, even hair loss and other sequelae.


This statement is not rigorous.


Hair loss after shampoo does exist, but the reason may be that preservatives, flavors, surfactants and silicone oil are also one of the possibilities. Take my personal experience as an example. I used to wash my hair with silicone oil shampoo, but once I changed to a silicone oil free shampoo, my hair fell off.


Therefore, if you use shampoo to cause hair loss, you should consider the whole product, rather than letting silicone oil be the scapegoat.


There is no direct evidence that silicone oil causes clogged scalp pores. According to the American cosmetics association, silicone oil is safe for cosmetics and does not irritate the skin. Although it can form a hydrophobic membrane on the skin, it is also breathable.


In addition, there is no evidence of teratogenicity, carcinogenicity and genotoxicity of PDMS.
