Silicone oil is usually a linear polysiloxane product that stays liquid at room temperature. Generally divided into methyl silicone oil and modified silicone oil two categories.

The most commonly used silicone oil - methyl silicone oil, also known as ordinary silicone oil, its organic groups are all methyl, methyl silicone oil has good chemical stability, insulation, hydrophobic performance. It is made of dimethyl dichlorosilane hydrolyzed with water, the ring is made of low ring through cracking and distillation, and then the ring, the headstock and the catalyst are put together to form a mixture with different degree of polymerization.

Silicone oil is generally colorless (or pale yellow), tasteless, non-toxic, not volatile liquid. Silicone oil is insoluble in water, methanol, dialcohol and -ethoxyethanol. It is mutually soluble with benzene, dimethyl ether, methylethyl ketone, carbon tetrachloride or kerosene. It is slightly soluble in acetone, dioxane, ethanol and butanol. It has a small vapor pressure, a high flash and flash point, a low freezing point. As the number of segments n increases, the molecular weight increases and the viscosity increases, the silicone oil can have a variety of viscosities, ranging from 0.65 centimetres to millions of centimetres. If you want to make low viscosity silicone oil, you can use acid clay as a catalyst and conduct the polymerization at 180℃, or use sulfuric acid as a catalyst and conduct the polymerization at low temperature to produce high viscosity silicone oil or viscous material can use alkaline catalyst.

Silicone oil has excellent heat resistance, electrical insulation, weather resistance, hydrophobicity, physiological inertia and small surface tension, in addition to a low coefficient of viscosity and temperature, high compression resistance, some varieties also have radiation resistance performance.
