Journal of functional foods: effect of sulforaphane in broccoli seeds on lipid level and intestinal flora of mice fed with high-fat diet

Hits: 3890970 2020-03-30

Highlights:
*After gastrointestinal digestion in vitro, sulforaphane showed the highest bioavailability;
*Sulforaphane regulates lipid mass spectrometry and metabolism related gene expression;
*Supplementation of sulforaphane changed the composition and richness of intestinal flora;
*The relationship between biochemical factors and intestinal microorganisms was studied.
The bioavailability of Glucoraphanin is 46.2 ± 0.4%, which is the most abundant glucosinolate in broccoli. It has been reported that sulforaphane is a stable precursor of sulforaphane, an obesity related erythroid derived nuclear factor-2-like (Nrf2) inducer.
Therefore, Xinxing Xu, Mei Dai and Fei Lao from the school of food science and nutrition engineering, China Agricultural University, the National Research Center of fruit and vegetable processing engineering technology, the Key Laboratory of fruit and vegetable processing of the Ministry of agriculture, and the Beijing Key Laboratory of non thermal processing of food discussed the effect of sulforaphane on lipid metabolism and intestinal flora in mice fed with high-fat diet. Sulforaphane can reduce the weight of liver, the concentration of adipose tissue, serum inflammatory factors, the expression of Fas gene, and increase the expression of PPAR α, ctp1, acox gene in liver. In the intestinal microflora, sulforaphane also reduced the proportion of sclerenchyma / Bacteroides, and the abundance of microorganisms was positively correlated with high-fat diet.
The results show that sulforaphane is a potential anti obesity substance. It can be used as seed powder and biological products of cruciferous vegetables rich in sulforaphane in nutritional and functional foods.
