IOTA 704 is a specialized liquid medium designed for high vacuum environments, appearing as a colorless or transparent fluid. As the core working liquid in diffusion pumps, it plays a key role in transferring momentum and maintaining vacuum levels. Its basic features include a moderate viscosity (38±3 cst at 25℃), which ensures fluidity within the pump while avoiding excessive kinetic energy loss; a refractive index of 1.5500~1.5600 at 25℃, useful for routine quality checks to ensure consistency; and a relative density of 1.06~1.07 at 25℃, which is balanced to prevent rapid volume reduction due to evaporation. These characteristics form the foundation for its application in high vacuum scenarios.
The performance indicators of IOTA 704 are tailored for high vacuum requirements. The flash point (open cup) is ≥210℃, indicating high safety as it is not easily ignited in high-temperature environments. The freezing point is -35℃, allowing it to remain liquid even in low-temperature conditions, preventing pump damage or system failures. Most critically, its vacuum performance: a vacuum level of <10-7~10-8 Pa and a saturated vapor pressure of <2x10-8 Pa. These two metrics directly determine the vacuum level achievable by the diffusion pump. The low saturated vapor pressure means minimal evaporation at high temperatures, enabling long-term maintenance of high vacuum and reducing oil change frequency, thus lowering usage costs.
IOTA 704 is used in multiple industries with strict vacuum requirements. In high vacuum metallurgy, it maintains the vacuum environment during metal smelting, ensuring metals melt in an oxygen-free condition to reduce impurities. In the electron tube industry, its low vapor pressure ensures high vacuum inside electron tubes, enhancing their performance and lifespan. For light bulb manufacturing, the high vacuum prevents filament oxidation, extending bulb life. In high vacuum coating (film) applications, stable vacuum is key to preparing uniform, dense films, and IOTA 704 provides reliable support. Additionally, it is used in atomic accelerators, electron microscopes, and display production, where high vacuum is essential.
Compared to ordinary diffusion pump oils, IOTA 704 excels in thermal stability and oxidation resistance. Good thermal stability prevents decomposition during long-term high-temperature operation, while oxidation resistance extends oil life and reduces quality deterioration. When using, regularly check the oil's viscosity and vapor pressure; if viscosity changes by more than ±3 cst or vapor pressure rises, replace the oil to maintain system vacuum. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and high temperatures to prevent deterioration.
